Q: How does the music industry look like to you in 2024?
A: The music industry in 2024 is fast-paced and brimming with opportunities. Social media algorithms and streaming services play a pivotal role in shaping music consumption, leading to the constant influx of new artists. However, platforms like TikTok often create a surge of one-hit wonders who quickly fade away. For booking agents, this dynamic offers the chance to continually explore fresh talents and enhance our lineups with exciting new acts. However, the downside is the growing gap between artists and their audiences, as platforms tend to promote individual songs rather than the artists behind them. This often results in artists with massive streaming numbers but relatively low concert attendance. I’m intrigued to see how this aspect of the industry will develop.
Q: What are the main challenges that a young person faces when starting out in the current music industry (in Romania)?
A: The music industry in Romania is still in development, compared to some of our more established European neighbors. One of the main challenges we face is the scarcity of mentors and opportunities for young talent to grow. While there are many talented professionals, it’s still difficult for young people to find guidance and support for their careers, unlike in other countries. Additionally, certain outdated practices persist, which can hinder progress. Despite these challenges, I have high hopes for the Romanian market, as it continues to evolve and improve.
Q: What is the professional achievement of which you are most proud?
A: I’m most proud of being able to do what I love. Working in an environment filled with projects I believe in keeps me energized and passionate. It is not about one specific achievement, but rather the overall experience of seeing people enjoy the festivals we organize. Witnessing the joy and excitement of the festival goers makes all the hard work worth it and fills me with pride.
Q: How does the future of the music industry (in Romania) look like to you?
A: I believe we are gradually adopting best practices from the West, which is helping elevate our industry for both professionals and participants. It is also encouraging to see the positive feedback we receive from the A-list artists we host at our festival. It shows that Romania is becoming a more attractive destination for major acts, which will only lead to more amazing shows and talent coming our way. I am thrilled to be part of this evolving industry.
Q: How did you break into the music industry?
A: I started as a promoter in high school, focusing on international urban music and local acts. This was in 2018 when trap music was gaining traction. By the time the pandemic hit, I had already organized events in over eight cities in Romania. Although the pandemic halted my business, it also led me to pursue my studies in the Netherlands. Alongside my bachelor studies, I also gained valuable knowledge and mentorship from Andries van Wieren at 3S Music. Once the restrictions were lifted, I organized events in the Netherlands, which helped me further develop my skills. Now, as the youngest member of the EC Team, I am grateful for the support and guidance from Edmond Lenarth and the entire booking department.
Q: What piece of advice would you give to a young person dreaming of working in the music industry?
A: Set a personal goal and work tirelessly towards it. The journey can be challenging and filled with doubts, but perseverance and self-belief are crucial. My own journey was not easy; I had to work as a delivery driver in the Netherlands to support myself while studying and working in the music industry. Always remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing to stay motivated. Additionally, be curious and eager to learn. Throughout my career, I’ve taken on various roles, from managing artists to learning finance and marketing, to broaden my understanding of the industry. Never stop asking questions and seeking knowledge.
